OVERVIEW
Oxfam International is an organization committed to reducing poverty. Their mission statement is: “the power of people against poverty”. They are based in the belief that poverty is not inevitable and there are so many ways to fight it. There are many initiatives and donation-based programs stemming from this organization. One of them is called a “Hunger Banquet,” and is used as an awareness event as well as an experiential learning event. Oxfam International provides templates and support for volunteers who wish to host one of these banquets. At the banquet, there is a dinner based in inequality and world hunger. Upon arrival, the guest receives an identity stating whether they will be considered “lower class,” “middle class,” or “high class”. This distinction is accompanied by the story of a real person from somewhere in the world and their experience with poverty and hunger. A meal is served, but the amount and type of food a guest receives depends on their given identity for the night. The purpose is to raise awareness of hunger across the globe, and touch the hearts of the guests by showing them how they can make a difference.
